My sister shared something interesting with me today. Her youngest son has been having night terrors lately. He’s anxious while trying to get sleepy and often can’t fall back asleep once he has a nightmare. In response, my sister has been letting him sleep in bed with her lately. It’s just easier for both of them.
Last night, things got really interesting. In the middle of the night, her son sat upright in bed and looked around the room with a confused expression. Then, he screamed, “Right fucking now,” before lying back down and promptly falling asleep. Unsure what to say, my sister just sat there wide-eyed, her jaw hanging open in disbelief. After all, it’s not something you’d expect to hear from an eight-year-old.
When my sister told me this, a few questions came to mind (after I laughed hysterically). Where did he hear such language? Was she proud that he used it correctly in a sentence, or was she mortified? And what in the world was he dreaming about?
We may never know the answer to the first question. Children’s brains are made of magic and super glue. Every word, concept, or hair-brained idea sticks in their mind… for better or worse. I can only speculate where he initially heard the swear word. Maybe he learned it from a school friend or in a movie he wasn’t supposed to be watching. All I can say for sure is that my sister doesn’t use that type of language in front of her kids (and she strictly monitors their viewing content). So… who knows?
More importantly, what was he doing in his dreams that would prompt such a grown-up comment? My sister theorizes he was likely dreaming of his favorite snack, Cheetos. Perhaps someone in the dream asked when he wanted the Cheetos… and that’s when he replied, “Right f*cking now!” Of course, she’s mostly joking. But he does take snack time pretty seriously.
As a person prone to vivid dreams, I can relate to my nephew’s sleep talking. I even have a theory as to why he said what he said. You see, dreams are the playground of the soul. It’s where our hopes, dreams, and secrets reside. It’s where our spirit goes to gain some perspective while our physical body is resting in bed. Occasionally, a spirit guide or deceased loved one will show up in our dreams to offer guidance or challenge us with motivational questions. My nephew is one of the most athletic youngsters I’ve ever known. Surely, he has a spirit guide with the personality of a drill sergeant or personal trainer. I imagine they asked him questions like this last night…
Do you want to be good at soccer or do you want to be great at soccer?
How hard are you willing to practice?
What is your biggest motivation?
Where can you find extra courage and strength?
Why second-guess yourself when you already know the right answer?
When do you want to start achieving greatness?
This would have been the moment he had a cathartic response and sat up to scream, “Right f*cking now!”
I can’t blame him. Neither can my sister. Dream world is different from the real world. In our slumber, we don’t perceive limits to our potential. There are no filters, restrictions, or inhibitions. Dreams give us a chance to feel free and unstoppable. It’s where our motivations collide with passions, and emotions boil over.
I can’t say for certain what my nephew dreamt of last night. I only know it evoked strong emotions within his heart and soul. And maybe his response was an appropriate one after all. It’s such a good answer to any number of questions you might ask yourself.
When do you want to wake up and start living the life you always imagined?
When is a good time to invest in yourself?
When will you finally start caring about your own needs?
When will you finally realize you’re enough?
When will you decide there is nothing stopping you?
Right f*cking now.
There’s no denying it’s a great answer. Time is a funny thing. No matter how much we have, we always want more. And yet, it’s something we’re never guaranteed. For some folks, tomorrow never comes. This is why we must live for NOW. The present moment is all we truly have. Whatever your dreams are, pursue them now. If you love someone, tell them now. If you’re feeling stuck, miserable, or depressed, take action right f*cking now! You owe it to yourself. And the world owes you what you deserve… which is happiness.
Joy is our birthright. It’s not a fleeting pipe dream only achieved by those who have cracked some secret code. Any of us can live a joy-filled life. Doing so requires a hard look in the mirror, a little effort, and a sense of urgency to take the necessary changes in one’s life.
Now is the time for change.
Now is the time for growth.
Now is the time for happiness.
Now is the perfect time to invest in yourself, personally, professionally, and spiritually.
If you don’t believe me, ask my nephew. At the tender age of eight, he’s got some things figured out that many adults have forgotten about. Either that, or he really was dreaming about Cheetos.
Dream on, dreamers

Andy, I LOVE this! Thank you for this story. I cannot tell you how perfect the timing is for me and the words you've written so clearly. You just gave me the final push to venture into something I've been afraid to step into, even though I know it's going to be an amazing adventure.
