Is it possible to read someone’s mind?
Yes, although it generally happens accidentally rather than on purpose. My daughter, Sky, frequently wiggles into my mind and plucks a thought from the branch of my brain. It’s extraordinary.
While creating this very book, I asked Sky if she had a question about spiritual topics that I should address within these pages. You know, something others might also be curious about. She thought about it for a moment.
“What’s the difference between a soul and a spirit,” she said while still looking down at the video game she was playing.
My jaw hung open in disbelief. At that very instant, I was thinking of addressing that exact question. I told her to stop reading my mind. We both laughed, and the moment left me with goosebumps.
Ultimately, I decided not to address that question. It’s a good one, but the answer is simply too short. A soul and a spirit are essentially the same thing.
I recall another time when Sky eavesdropped on my thoughts. She was five years old, and it was bedtime. We were lying in bed next to each other as she attempted to get sleepy. We hadn’t spoken a word in several minutes. While staring at the ceiling, my mind began to wander. I’m not sure why, but I silently wondered which direction the foot of her bed was facing. After mentally orienting myself to the outdoor surroundings, I concluded we were facing north.
Just then, she said, “Hey, Dad, is my bed pointing to the north or south?”
It was an unusual notion for someone to ponder in the first place. Yet, two people in the same bed… thinking the same thought… at the same time? It defied any logic or probability. I would love to ask a statistician about the odds of that happening. I could only conclude we were on the same mental wavelength at that moment. She had read my mind.
Experiences like this would occur more frequently if two people have a special connection. I’m certainly close with my daughter, so perhaps moments like that should come as no surprise. And yet, it always leaves me speechless when it happens.
Of course, those moments seem to happen organically. Conversely, I’ve had clients jokingly put me on the spot by asking, “What am I thinking right this very second?”
I’ll smile and explain that’s not exactly how psychic abilities work. However, I don’t mind the playful psychic jokes. In fact, there’s a sign that always makes me laugh when I pass it. The sign is located at a whimsical pumpkin patch near my home city of Omaha. It reads, “The annual meeting of the clairvoyants’ circle had to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Mind reading. It makes me think of a gimmicky talk show host wearing a turban and pretending to mind-meld with audience members. As far-fetched as mind reading might sound to a skeptic, those like myself who have experienced it cannot deny that it’s possible.
Perhaps it’s an untapped, super-human ability that our species will harness in the distant future. Maybe the gift hovers somewhere between science and spirituality in a gray area that cannot fully be explained.
