Getting away from consumer culture

November is an odd month. This Thursday, many of us will count our blessings and give thanks for the abundance we have in our lives. The following day, the tune completely changes as people catch Black Friday fever and splurge on more gadgets, more gizmos, more shiny things, and more sales. More. More. More.

For some businesses, Black Friday has become a month-long event rather than a one-day extravaganza. This means consumerism slowly trickles in like drips falling through a coffee filter instead of erupting all at once like a volcano. On the plus side, shopping stampedes are declining because most people purchase items online. Yet, the irony of the month tends to leave me with mental whiplash. When is enough really enough? How much “stuff” is required to feel like we have all we need? When did quantity become more important than quality? And how can we enjoy the magic of the season without getting carried away or falling into the trap of keeping up with the Joneses?

This year, I’ve decided to take a different approach to my holiday shopping. Instead of gifting material items, I’m determined to gift an experience to those I love most. It might be tickets to a play, a coupon for a cooking class, or a voucher for a free painting lesson. We cannot take anything with us to the afterlife when we depart this world. The only thing we’ll have is the memories we made and the experiences we had along the way. An experience is a gift that keeps on giving. The best way to stay young and enjoy life is to try new things, explore new hobbies, and get out of our comfort zones. In doing so, we learn more about ourselves and the world around us.

Discounts on memorable experiences are one thing, but some gifts are truly priceless. My mom, Sue, makes Christmas cookie plates for dozens of family and friends each year. She personally delivers them to loved ones in all parts of the city, which requires a full tank of gas and a carefully mapped driving route to ensure efficiency.

She’s too humble to admit it, but her cookies are locally famous here in Omaha. She makes thousands of them (and I do mean that literally.) She usually begins baking them before Halloween and finishes around Thanksgiving. The cookies are sinfully delicious and come in a wide assortment of flavors. The care and love she puts into this process is what the holiday season is all about. It harkens back to simpler times… when neighbors talked to one another. When people went the extra mile. When a warm smile and plate of comfort food embodied the magic of the season.
