Chakras are energy centers that exist within certain parts of the body. Each of them correlates to emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. This “New Age” concept is actually very ancient, dating back to spiritual traditions in India long ago. Although many people now believe that there are more than seven chakras in total, I wanted to give a quick rundown of the seven “basic” chakras (in plain language that won’t go over anyone’s head).

Root Chakra
Color: Red
Location: Base of the spine
Represents: Stability, survival instincts, grounding, connecting to Earth.
How to know it’s blocked or misaligned: Sciatic pain, feeling off-balanced, feeling disconnected from reality.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Walk barefoot on the ground, do leisurely gardening, do deep breathing and meditation, create a safe space for yourself, or wear a weighted vest or blanket.Think of the root chakra as the base of the pyramid or the foundation of the house. It needs to be solid if the other elements on top are going to remain stable.
Sacral Chakra
Color: Orange
Location: Lower abdomen, just below the belly button
Represents: Creativity, sensuality, expressing emotions, pleasure
How to know it’s blocked or misaligned: Drop in creativity, stifled libido, emotional disregulation, feeling “blah” about things that used to excite you.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Visit somewhere that inspires you, get comfortable with feeling your feelings, express emotions rather than suppress them, and speak positively about yourself (and your body). The spirit guides have told me it’s common to feel extra energy within this chakra during the spring and fall seasons each year.
Solar Plexus Chakra
Color: Yellow
Location: Upper abdomen/near the stomach
Represents: Confidence, determination, feeling good about yourself
How to know if it’s blocked or misaligned: Self-defeating thoughts, lack of motivation, being self-critical, finding it hard to make decisions
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Consider a diet that promotes gut health, keep spirits high by writing a list of your strengths or accomplishments, and avoid absorbing too much negativity from others or the world around you. This is a commonly disrupted chakra. The good news is that nothing is permanent. Like everything, the health of this chakra is on a spectrum and can change daily.
Heart Chakra
Color: Green
Location: Center of the chest
Represents: Love, compassion, understanding, emotional balance, forgiveness
How to know if it’s blocked or misaligned: Heartburn or indigestion (ruling out a reaction to spicy food, etc). Feeling a lack of empathy, holding grudges, or feeling unworthy.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Deep breathing, meditation, seeking content that is uplifting, fostering connections that are authentic, and feeding relationships that are rooted in love.Happy people are healthy people. Healthy people live longer. It’s just that simple. Pay attention to the health of your heart chakra (and your heart in general).
Throat Chakra
Color: Blue
Location: Throat
Represents: Communication, truth, self-expression, and clarity
How to know it’s blocked or misaligned: Acid reflux or indigestion (ruling out side-effects such as spicy or acidic foods). A lump in your throat, feeling tongue tied, recurring throat problems like strep or drainage.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Speak your truth, make your voice heard, share your opinions, and speak kindly.
Humans are born to communicate. If you’re an extrovert who doesn’t get the chance to socialize very often, you could be at risk for this chakra being blocked. Strive to make connections and find an outlet to communicate with others. If you’re an introvert, it might be a matter of quality over quantity in terms of sharing your thoughts, but still be mindful to get things off your chest. If you want information from your spirit guides on how to keep ALL your chakras aligned and healthy, consider scheduling a Soul Discovery session. It’s a written form of psychic reading that contains a treasure-trove of information about your body, mind, spirit, past, present, future, and so much more!

Third Eye Chakra
Color: Indigo
Location: Where your eye would be if you were a cyclops
Represents: Intuition, imagination, wisdom, wonder, psychic insights
How to know if it’s blocked or misaligned: Blurry vision, mental fog, intuitive confusion, lack of imagination, etc.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Trust your gut feelings, don’t overthink decisions, spend some time daydreaming, and be around others who are intuitive.
Everyone has psychic abilities to varying degrees. But it’s not a booming voice from above, it’s merely a whisper from within. Listen to your instincts when you “see” into a person’s essence. If it feels good and trustworthy, drop your guard and make a new friend. If you “see” anything that doesn’t sit right, keep your guard up and proceed with caution.Crown Chakra
Color: Violet or white
Location: Top of the head
Represents: Spiritual realms, consciousness, enlightenment, personal awakenings
How to know if it’s blocked or misaligned: Forgetting the bigger picture, a fundamental lack of empathy, disinterest in anything beyond this Earthly plain, depression, prolonged anger.
How to keep it aligned and healthy: Meditate and don’t ruminate. Read books on personal development and spiritual growth. Get outside and be in nature. Count your blessings. Keep things in perspective. Look for solutions rather than problems. Ask for help!
Those who go through a major spiritual awakening might feel their crown chakra blown right off… like pouring a fistful of Mentos into a bottle of Coke. BOOM! Thar she blows! It’s wondrous and quite a thrill ride when this happens. But I always remind people that when going through a spiritual awakening, it’s also important to stay grounded. One must not lose interest in Earthly matters even when spiritual interests take priority.
